Cope with information overload: Gmail Notifications by Community

Cope with information overload:  Gmail Notifications by Community

How to Sort Google+ Gmail Notifications by Community
Follow these simple steps to get back the control you need to effectively manage your notifications without missing anything important.

**IMPORTANT UPDATE: You must use "OR" instead of "or" thanks to John Skeats for pointing out!**

I'm just getting back to my Gmail account after weeks of neglect whilst on vacation. Since the dawn of the communities, if you have had your Google+ notifications filtered into a separate tag in your inbox, you have probably noticed a huge increase in the number of messages.

If you receive a high number of notifications like me, you are probably looking for a way to make sure that you can organize the notification to go back and review them on your own time.

The notification box in the upper right hand corner is cumbersome if you ever let it go above 5 or 10 notifications as it will grey out all of your notifications once you have interacted with one of them. This causes for quite a number of "missed posts" and notifications gone unnoticed.

I worked with Gerwin Sturm in a private community to troubleshoot this issue and design a system to keep your separate notifications sorted, that way your general Google+ notifications aren't intermingled with your community notifications. This is a great help to community moderators.

Here's what you need to do:
++++++++++++++++++++++

   - Create a filter for messages with subject "[Your Community Name]" to skip the inbox and archive into label "Your Community Name"
   - Repeat this process for all of your communities for which you subscribe to updates.
   - Once you have created a filter for each community, create another filter for your general G+ notifications. Create a filter for "From: Google+" with Doesn't Have: "[Your Community Name] OR [Other Community Name]" then label these as "G+ Notifications"
   - Presto!

After following these steps you should have some very well organized labels and the opportunity to view your notifications by community and on your own time. No more notification chaos!
